A spectacular sunshine adventure
Like the discoverer himself, Columbus will take you on an epic voyage to the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America – a truly fabulous winter escape. Visit idyllic islands in the sun with palm fringed beaches; visit Mayan ruins contrasting with colonial cities; and explore tropical rainforests with fascinating wildlife. The high point is likely to be magnificent Cuba featuring an overnight in pulsating Havana.
Follow in the footsteps of adventurers on this transatlantic voyage, which starts amid the canals of Amsterdam during a day stop at this engaging city. Then we head westwards to savour the rugged terrain of Ponta Delgada in the Azores before arriving in St John’s, Antigua, where helicopter trips and catamaran cruises offer an adventurous way to see the sights. Relax on the idyllic beaches of Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and soak up the Latin flavour of the Spanish Caribbean in the Dominican Republic at La Romana where you can opt to visit historic Santo Domingo, the first city of the New World. Discover a world of rum and reggae at Ocho Rios in Jamaica where one of the most popular activities is to visit the iconic Dunn’s River Falls.
A highlight of this voyage is an overnight stop at Cuba’s capital Havana, with its unique flavour of Caribbean-style communism and turbulent history of Spanish conquest and revolution. A relaxing day at the Cuban beach resort of Maria La Gorda is followed by a chance to visit ancient Mayan ruins from Playa del Carmen in Mexico and Belize City. Beach life and water sports dominate your day at Roatan Island in Honduras, while trips into the rainforest beckon from Puerto Limon in Costa Rica. From Cristobal in Panama, take an optional trip to Panama City and at Cartagena, discover the heritage of this Colombian walled city before we sail to the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao. Barbados, with its pretty beaches and English heritage is our last Caribbean stop, before we return across the Atlantic, calling at Horta in the Azores and Portugal’s atmospheric capital Lisbon.
